Well... it's been over a month now since my barn rescued some horses. A lady about an hour away from the barn surrendered her horses to the SPCA (actually, I think they found out about the horses and were about to take them when she surrendered them). My barn was contacted to take ALL of them - there were 12 (one was dead). This was on a Friday. The following day, we were told that all of the horses had been adopted out - which is wonderful. Weeeeeeeell, the SPCA gets back to us to tell us that there are some more left. So, Sunday comes around and the barn heads out there.
There are 3 horses left - a mare that has to have 6 or more people lift her up (she was down and WOULD NOT get up) whose baby had also died in the stall with her (it stayed there for 3 weeks, dead); a filly that was in complete darkness (no natural light, no lamps... no nothing; we all call it the "coffin"); and then a stud colt who was actually in pretty good shape (aside of burrs and manure stains). We grabbed Hope, the downs mare, first and brought her home. Then it was Angel's (filly in darkness) turn... and, after some nagging at Nanci (barn owner), they turned around and got Spirit Boy (stud colt). Everything seemed to be going well once they got back home.
And then Tuesday came. Nanci walked into the barn to find Hope down, like they had found her at the other barn where she was. She called the vet and Teddy (our vet) actually wanted to put her down. Nanci wouldn't let her and we all worked together to get Hope up and we stuck an IV into her. Anyway, the following two weeks pretty much involved shifts during the long, cold nights to watch Hope. We managed and now... Hope is strong enough to get up on her own.
Angel and Spirit are looking & acting tons better. Angel can now be haltered and petted and brushed (though she's wary of it - she had had no human interaction before). She got her feet done on Friday, which was very scary. She had a paradoxical reaction to the sedative. Instantly, right after Teddy gave her the sedative, she pushed Teddy into the corner and kind of reared on her (Teddy is probably about Ashleigh Griffen's size/height if Ashleigh were real) and then she rammed Nanci (who is also built like Ashleigh) into the door and then ran to the back of the stall, ran back and went down and started thrashing around. It was horrible. =[ Poor baby put her back foot, but she's okay. We covered her face and gave her Valium and within about 10 minutes, she was up. We got her feet done and they look soooo much better. Friday was also an exciting day for Spirit Boy - he woke up a stallion and went to sleep a gelding! Lol. He took better to everything than Angel.
That's all I have to say. If you'd like more info, check out this.
Here are some pictures of the horses:
(Hope's one eye seems odd because when she fell Tuesday, she landed on that side and cut her eye up)
